Musical Improv Comedy: Creating Songs in the Moment ReviewI teach Children's Comedy Theatre in North Hollywood. We have been doing improvised singing for a long time and I've always wanted a nice easy resource to use when teaching people how to create a song on the spot. This book is it. Not only is it VERY simple to follow and an excellent source of information, it also contains a CD that will be a fixture in my teaching for ages to come. If anyone has ever improvised a song, played music, or just wanted to be able to think quicker on their feet, this is the book for you.

Fabulous Small Jews ReviewAlthough there are 15 stories listed in the table of contents, it's impossible to come up with a real total of all the narratives in Joseph Epstein's Fabulous Small Jews. Epstein uses stories for every possible function: to set a mood (a joke), to set a place (childhood memory), to describe a character (every character in this book receives a short bio). Reading Epstein is a little like wandering through a city without a map; one story ends and another begins and, slowly but surely, something of human experience becomes evident. Like Homer or the Brothers Grim, Epstein's stories read like they've accumulated through a dense oral culture before transcription. Of course they haven't, and that's one of the reasons this book is so good.
The other reason is that Epstein never forgets that, willful as people may be, human agency is only truly tested by fate, by what we never see coming around the corner till it changes our lives. Fabulous Small Jews revolves around some of the most difficult situations fate can come up with: bereavement, divorce, cancer, alzheimers, weariness of life. It's a messy world, and the only redeeming feature is that Epstein's characters never stop trying to do the right thing, never stop trying to wrest a livable destiny from a cruel fate. The fact that they manage to do just that may not live up to statistical analysis but it's the hallmark of great stories, and of the ways imagination reframes lived experience. It's also an indicatation of Epstein's generosity--both toward his characters and his readers. Dignified resolutions restore our ability to make hard decisions with courage, clarity, and hope; that doesn't necessarily make them happy endings. Luckily, Joseph Epstein knows the difference.Fabulous Small Jews Overview

The Complete Artist's Way: Creativity as a Spiritual Practice ReviewThe exercises in the first part of this "trilogy" is more than worth the price of the book. If you choose to do the exercises, your creativity will be released/unblocked. What a positive response this book is for really anyone who wants to live more creatively. If you want to think of yourself as an artist, or if you never thought of yourself as an artist before, this book is for you. I have already given it as a gift and I'm not even half way through with the reading/journaling/pondering. It would be a tremendous book for your local library. Then, use it on a solo journey or work through it with a group. GigiThe Complete Artist's Way: Creativity as a Spiritual Practice Overview

Talk the Talk: A Dialogue Workshop for Scriptwriters ReviewTalk the Talk is a rare find: a writing book of clear, concrete exercises to improve your writing. This is not a host of self-exploratory essay assignments, these are clear, concise exercises to build up your writing skills, particularly focusing on dramatic dialogue, with a secondary emphasis on structure. It's a good companion to more structurally focused books like McKee's Story, which I always found lacking in help on what to do in a particular moment. It's great to know what should happen on page 33, but what about poor, neglected page 19? How do you turn your scene into something dramatically taut, instead of just a stepping stone in your story's journey? Penniston takes the lead of each chapter to focus on a particular tool in the writer's belt, and then has a host of helpful exercises to develop your skills. Even better, if you are teaching dramatic writing (or a self-directed student), she includes detailed syllabuses to build your own coursework. I've read a number of writing books, and this book is unique.
This is an excellent book for the professional educator or writer alike. Strongly recommended.Talk the Talk: A Dialogue Workshop for Scriptwriters Overview

Writing for Visual Media, Third Edition ReviewI received a review copy of this book and since my husband is a writer, I was kind of looking forward to it. I was also looking forward to the CD that the other reviewers talked about and was a bit miffed when I found the book didn't come with it. I felt cheated, then I found the business card clued to the inside front cover which directed me to go to the authors website. Once there I was prompted to enter the last full word in the last paragraph on page 17, along with my name and email address and voila, I was registered. Once in, I found that the website contains all the info that was on the CD I didn't get and instead of being slow, as one reviewer said, it's fast.
So using this book the way Mr. Friedmann intends, you know, reading a chapter, then going to the website, is a powerful way, I think, to learn how to write for media. The website is great and the book covers absolutely every thing you'd want to know, whether you want to write scripts or commercials. But the important thing, what makes this book so doggone good, is what it's not. One of the thing is not is boring. The other thing it's not is it's not written like a textbook. This book is kind of fun and it's interesting as all get out. If you've ever thought about writing for Television or the Movies or you just wanna do Jingles, well this is the book for you.Writing for Visual Media, Third Edition Overview

The Idea Writers: Copywriting in a New Media and Marketing Era (Advertising Age) ReviewI really enjoyed reading this book. I've gained many new insights and it was money well spent.
Whereas other great books on advertising I've been reading recently are handbooks or full of tips (Sullivan's Hey whipple, Felton's Advertising, concept & copy), this one is something different. Instead of being crammed with "how-tos" it reads like a long magazine article discussing "the new rules" that modern creatives must learn to play by.
If you've just come from the handbooks telling you about the classic AD/copy-relation and how it's supposed to work it's both surprising and refreshing to hear someone say this may not apply anymore. I will still go back to the old handbooks for picking up new (old and tried) ways to master the craft as a copywriter, but The Idea Writers offers a new and interesting perspective.
I guess what the book does so well is that it collects and sums up many interesting examples and discusses them as indications of a big shift taking place in advertising.
I will read this book again! The Idea Writers: Copywriting in a New Media and Marketing Era (Advertising Age) Overview
