Big Studio Secrets for Home Recording and Production ReviewIn the past few weeks, I've checked out many books about home music production. Some books are very focused on the latest plugins and software. Some spend lots of time discussing the business of production. Some provide detailed lists of "Shoulds" and "Should Nots", leaving very little wiggle room for experimentation and fun.
This is the first book I've found that provides the perfect balance for the amateur music producer. This book combines (a) real techniques for micing, processing, mixing and mastering, (b) practical suggestions on music arranging, (c) insider knowledge on "standard" equipment, such as microphones, and (d) a historical perspective on how music recording has evolved over the years. All of this within the spirit of enjoying the task at hand - not as a job but as a hobby.
The tone of the book is very welcoming. It reminds you that great recordings have been made for decades, long before the current "state-of-the-art" technology existed. By focusing on sound engineering principles, plus a discussion of standard practices and terminology, this book has the qualities of a timeless companion for the home recording enthusiast.Big Studio Secrets for Home Recording and Production Overview

Home Studio Setup: Everything You Need to Know from Equipment to Acoustics (The Mastering Music Series) ReviewI"m sorry to have to give this book a three star review, however, it has very litle to do with HOME RECORDING, at least with the traditional, D.I.Y. vectors like cassette four tracks, ADATS, and now the stand alone DAW recorders. (Most are those are 8 track, have all the sliders, faders, equalizers, and even processors, that make home recording fast, easy and practical.) I've done a LOT of home recording, and read a lot of books on it. Normally, you can find such fun suggestions on how to use the bathroom for natural reverb, or using direct injection, etc. NONE of that is covered in this book, however. The author teaches a class in PRO TOOLS, and has his own studio for professional recording, connected to his home. So, this is what ALL home recording ought to be? The first third of the book covers acoustics. Interesting subject, but for home studios, you would need to build your own addition onto your home, soundproof it, and then even build one or two extra rooms for equipment storage, and the sound engineer's room. Is that what you are after for home recording? If so, you found your book.
Actually, this book wouldnt be bad, for what it is, but it doesnt seem to be edited well. For instance, building an actual studio room, soundproofed as Harris discribes, with the baffling and sound dampers, would cost tens of thousands of dollars. SO, even tho the PROTOOLS program might be relatively cheap, the interfaces he recommends, the outboard processors, the tons of different mics, studio monitors, etc, is EXPENSIVE. Also, it has NOTHING to do with home recording. Have people forgotten that those four track cassette home recorders were used to record albums like Springsteen's NEBRASKA, or the early albums by WEEN? All this extra stuff this book advocates, isnt nessacary, unless you are in a mid level signed band, that has a dedicated practice and recording area, and want to record your album yourself.
There is a second problem, ie, the editing. Do you need a book that discribes the difference between MACs and PCs? Do you need to be told what a HARD DRIVE is? C'mon, if you need that info, then you need a BEGINNERS book on computers. Why was this included? Also, he discribes the difference between DYNAMIC and CONDENSER mics. First time in chapter five, and REVIEWS it in chapter 9. This stuff is so fundamental, that if you dont know it, I doubt you are ready for 39 pages about advanced Acoustics, or asking yourself questions like "Do i want to build a 1 room or 3 room studio, and do I want to use one, two or three engineers?" This is the problem thruout the book. BASIC INFORMATION is included about computers, or how sound is produced in microphones, but home recording basics outside of PROTOOLS is skipped cos its too "amateur". Nothing is said about the stand alone DAW recorders, except that they are only good for making a quick sketch of a song, ie, a lousy sounding demo. Now, shouldnt things like DIRECT INJECTION of a bass, or guitar be included, if you are this deep into MIDI? Or, if you are going to cover miking acoustic instruments, (ie, GUITAR) do you think that you MIGHT cover the acoustic piano? (I bought the book for that reason.) There is more information in the book about the right LAVA LAMP to create a studio's mood, than there is on acoustic piano miking. I'm not kidding either. Even the part of the book that discribes mix down of tracks, is strange. PANNING is explained in a very concrete, unimaginative manner. "THIS IS WHERE YOUR INSTRUMENTS BELONG" in the stereo picture, and little else is considered. So, for my needs, the book just didnt have much. The information about how to acheive an acoustically DEAD room, is wasted space. Interesting, but only needed for buiding a truly professional recording studio. And why was that info included about stand alone plate REVERB units, stand alone microphone preamps (doesnt everybody at home use phantom power?), and various outboard effects units? Then, you get the BASICS, like how midi data streams are produced. (yup, read about that 20 years ago. If you are writing about how to use PROTOOLs, you have to assume your reader already KNOWS about MIDI interfaces, and the difference between digital and analogue.) I was stunned, when the guy assumed his readers knew zip about HARD DRIVE units.
Overall, between the wasted book space on acoustics so your carpenter can design a soundproof studio, and the other places where microphone basics are explained, the book just doesnt understand its "AUDIENCE". This is a book for professional musicians with lots of money, looking to build a home studio for professional recording, but who dont know the difference between a MAC and a PC, or the difference between microphones, or even closed and open backed headphones. It doenst cover what 99.9% of the people who REALLY want to have a home studio might need to know. People want to know how to make your own demos, or even MIX ready digital recordings, in a bedroom, using direct injection OR amp miking, and a sound processor to compensate for the lack of an acoustically "DEAD" room. If you want to get as deep into recording as part of this book covers, you will get bored, cos its way too complex for a beginner, working his way thru his first demo of a first composistion. And, if you want the complex info included to build a pro studio, the basic stuff would bore you too. Maybe that's the REAL problem here. What constitutes a "home studio" is the one the writer had made to record bands in, and what constitutes a "good recording" is one that is done with the equipment he owns, that conforms to the way he THINKS a professional recording ought to sound. If your thinking falls outside of boxes like this, or if you budget falls short of the BIG BUDGET you would need to make a studio like the one he recommends, then you dont need or want this book. Basically, its a book for professional studios running PROTOOLS, with a few basics thrown in, to make it seem like its for "beginners", and "home studio enthusiasts". By trying to supply both professional and amatuer needs, it falls short of both.Home Studio Setup: Everything You Need to Know from Equipment to Acoustics (The Mastering Music Series) Overview

The Early Years of the Les Paul Legacy 1915-1963 ReviewAfter weathering many delays Robb's book finally sees the light of day and boy, was it worth the wait. Thoughtfully written and impecably researched, this book is to be included among the best guitar reference tomes of Tom Wheeler, Richard Smith, and Nacho Banos.
The biography section in entertaining and informative, but the guitar section is where this book really throws down the goods. Awesomely photographed and interspersed with interviews and info. I have seen and read just about every vintage guitar book and was delighted to view many prototype guitars and details never seen in any book. The wonderful up-close pictures of "Pearly Gates" and "Hot'Lanta" were highlights.
Sections on Les Paul amps, Customs, Juniors, Specials, and 45 pages of '58-'60 Les Paul Sunbursts in all of their glory...it's all here.
Do not hesitate to get this book, you will not be disappointed!
Robb Lawrence has certainly raised the bar with this book and I eagerly await volume II. Bravo Robb!!!!!

Working with Audio ReviewThis book is nearly identical to Alten's college textbook, "Audio in Media," but slightly more concise and practical...in other words, aimed toward the same students. Moreover, for colleges to insist their students pay $200 for "Audio in Media" when this book is available would be criminal.
Moreover, Audio in Media goes through the same edition racket as other textbooks: introducing only cosmetic changes in order to thwart the used book market.Working with Audio Overview

Mixing, Recording, and Producing Techniques of the Pros: Insights on Recording Audio for Music, Video, Film, and Games ReviewThis large book is a thing of joy. If you have any interest at all in recorded music, and you wonder how a few people playing in a room can make a record that will move millions of people, you will relish Rick Clark's book. And if you're a serious hobbyist or seasoned professional, you will appreciate all the detail about microphones, consoles, outboard gear and how to get the most out of them.
Clark's bio is enlightening - he grew up in Memphis listening to Sun 45s, Southern soul music, The Beatles and The Kinks. He played in bands and hung around the legendary Ardent studio in his hometown. As he puts it, he "kind of fell into writing in the '80s", however he quickly chalked up articles in numerous top publications like Rolling Stone, Billboard and, crucially, Mix Magazine. This led to him interviewing many people involved in recording - not just producers and engineers but also the musicians themselves. He had the foresight to transcribe the entire interviews and thus has amassed a goldmine of insights into the minds of these experts.
The book is divided into chapters such as "Bass", "Guitar", "Vocals", "Mixing" etc but also has more reflective chapters such as "Creative Production and Recording" and "Production Philosophy". Each chapter features extensive interviews with experts in the field, and every interview is densely packed with insight.
There's a short bio for each of the hundred or so interviewees listening their experience and who they've worked with. They include legendary producers such as Tony Visconti, Roy Thomas Baker and Jim Dickinson, and notable musicians such as Jerry Douglas, Leland Sklar and Wayne Jackson. Also contributing are many engineers and other technical experts who may not be household names but have been present at the birth of many great recordings.
There are countless pithy epigrams scattered throughout this volume, but I'll choose a representative one from producer Norbert Putnam, who played bass on many Elvis Presley sessions: "When you have a purveyor of emotion, like Al Green or Elvis Presley, then you have magic. That is the beginning and the end of it. It is never the equipment. It is not the SSL, Neve, Mackie or Trident console. It is not the snare drum or the reverb... It really is the artist."Mixing, Recording, and Producing Techniques of the Pros: Insights on Recording Audio for Music, Video, Film, and Games Overview

The MIDI Manual, Third Edition: A Practical Guide to MIDI in the Project Studio ReviewI bought the book to be used as the text for a college class. Many good MIDI books are out there, but this one is the best from what I've seen. MIDI has not changed much over the last decade however computers have. It is therefore very important to use the newest text on the subject. Written in a straight forward manner, good aspects to MIDI are conveyed. PC Recording Studios For Dummies ReviewThe book is not bad for someone who is new to recording; although, the technical information written in the book is outdated! Author mentioned for example that USB2 is brand new think in computing; I have USB2 for several years and the copyright of this book is 2005! Also while writing of this book, author use Mac computer and not PC as mentioned in the title of this book. In examples of software, author works with Mac software costing $1000 and another software (Pro Tools) that run on both, PC and Mac. Author mentioned in the book, that 32 track recording software is not sufficient. The version of Pro Tools that is not limited to 32 tracks starts at $4000. Author should use examples for Sonar or Cubase to keep trend with home recording engineers. Those software are professional quality and financially friendlier. About $500.
I would like to conclude my review. If you want a book that explain you basic of home recording and you are willing to do extensive research about software and hardware through Internet or other sources, the book is for you. From the other hand, hardware and software for recording is changing so rapidly that you would have to make some research anyway, though, this book would be actual about 5 years ago. Myself, I wouldn't buy this book if I new how outdated information it contained.PC Recording Studios For Dummies Overview

Audio Engineering 101: A Beginner's Guide to Music Production ReviewDISCLAIMER: Although this was given to me through Vine to review, unlike other questionable "reviewers", I actually take the time to USE the product or READ the book. So whatever score/review the product gets, it's absolutely earned. At no time is a product given a particular review or rating simply because I fear loosing Vine status. That's not how the Vine program operates.
Anyhoo, onto the review:
Plainly put, this is a great book. Not only does the author take the time to explain, in detail, what how and why things work the way they do, he also provides illustrations for the layman. I read this cover to cover over a period of a week and honestly learned quite a bit. And I've been in audio production for years! You can definitely tell the author knows his stuff and has actually DONE what he writes about. In lieu of some authors who just compile information and later jam it all together into what barely passes as a book.
I definitely applaud the author and highly recommend this book to those wishing to learn the basics, and to a point, the higher-level operation of sound reproduction.Audio Engineering 101: A Beginner's Guide to Music Production Overview

Your Cubase Studio ReviewThe book is great, but you can only read it on a Kindle or Kindle DX. It will not let you use it Kindle for the PC for some unknown reason (which is the only reason I purchased this!). That is a BIG let down. The Complete Guide to Game Audio, Second Edition: For Composers, Musicians, Sound Designers, Game Developers (Gama Network Series) ReviewThis book focuses more on the business side of game audio. If you are looking for a 'how to' guide for composing and sound design, this is not the book for you.
However, for anyone interested in making a living by creating game audio content, this is a must read. Everything from networking, pricing your services, to standard contracts are covered. Of particular interest were the interviews throughout the book. Some more famous personalities, such as 'The Fat man' were interviewed, as well as some lesser known composers and sound designers. Some of them list what gear and software they use. I was surprised at both the spartan and the over the top set ups that some of these guys have.
The disc that comes with the book has some very useful content. Perhaps the best was the demos provided. If you are serious about composing, listen to these demos, they will give you an idea of what skill level you will need if you want to get any jobs.
Just a side note, at the end of the book Aaron suggests that you send him an email. I did, and got an encouraging response back from him. So he isn't just pretending to be a nice guy in the book, he really is!The Complete Guide to Game Audio, Second Edition: For Composers, Musicians, Sound Designers, Game Developers (Gama Network Series) Overview

FL Studio Power: The Comprehensive Guide ReviewLike many people who assume they know what they are doing... I jumped right into FL Studio without buying/picking up any books and with losing the original material which came with it (not unusual for me)... man I had no idea of what I could do until I picked this book up and read it. The official Bible for FL studio was a little out of my price range at the time so I picked up this book instead and have been running with it.
Until this book came into my life, one out of 25 intense studio sessions produced anything I'd want to associate my name with. After using this, one out of five sessions are producing awesome things for me. The other four (average) produce stuff which my friends who hear it say it's pretty good, but when they hear the one I'm proud of, they are amazed.FL Studio Power: The Comprehensive Guide Overview

The Everything Home Recording Book: From 4-track to digital--all you need to make your musical dreams a reality (Everything: Sports and Hobbies) ReviewGetting into home recording can be a bit intimidating, new and confusing terminology, so many different types of equipment, and prices ranging from cheap to outrageous. For the beginner, trying to navigate the maze of concepts, techniques, and purchases alone can lead to frustration on a good day. If this sounds familiar, if recording music at home is something you've been thinking about or doing but with little sucess, then Marc Schonbrun's `The Everything Home Recording Book' is THE book you need to get you going. It covers just about everything you would need to know to get started, from giving a brief history of the development of recording technology to budgeting your purchases, all the way to marketing your product. Although it doesn't cover every topic in extreme detail, the scope of the book is so great that getting into every topic covered in detail would make the book voluminous. Pretty much all of the bases are covered - different types of recording equipment, general prices for different pieces of gear, setting up your home studio, recording on different types of equipment like 4 track tape recorders, stand alone digital machines, and on the computer, using effects, mixers, and microphones, interfacing with your computer, getting the best signal possible, using MIDI, editing, mixing, and a host of other topics. His style is clear and engaging, educating but not condescending, and while every question may not be answered, and questions may develop while reading, the book as a whole will educate you to the point that the questions you need to ask a professional will be informed questions. Once you're through, you'll have a solid understanding of the process, equipment, and techniques, enabling you to start making the recordings you've been wanting to do. If you are new to the world of home recording, or unsatisfied with your knowledge or results, then I recommend strongly that your first purchase be `The Everything Home Recording Book'.The Everything Home Recording Book: From 4-track to digital--all you need to make your musical dreams a reality (Everything: Sports and Hobbies) Overview

The Future of Music: Manifesto for the Digital Music Revolution (Berklee Press) ReviewThis is a case of a lot of filler to make what could be communicated in a short essay into a book. The basic message "The music industry has to embrace digital technology." This and a few other salient points are made early in the book and then repeated with different wording ad nauseum. I would suggest standing in the store, reading the introductory stuff and skimming the rest. Too many authors are doing this these days. It should have been a magazine article. The Future of Music: Manifesto for the Digital Music Revolution (Berklee Press) Overview

Tape Op: The Book About Creative Music Recording ReviewA most interesting collection of articles and interviews from Tape Op (the magazine) early issues. The angle taken in this material is decidedly different from what a reader usually encounters in the world of recording technique literature (particularly the glossy monthly magazines), where the virtues of the latest, greatest, and most expensive piece of magical digital gear are extolled.
Instead, Tape Op focuses on making do with what you've got, and where you've got it plunked down. Stories of really engaging music and CD's made with simple, inexpensive, "obsolete" 4-track gear (cassette even!). Engineers freely admitting that some "mistake" or chance event provided just the element that a particular tune needed. In short, a really refreshing perspective in comparison with much of the literature available discussing the mega-buck, high tech studios in the major recording centers cranking out hits from the latest boy band.
There were times when I grew a little tired of the "digital sucks" rants. But just when I started to feel that fatigue set in, an article would come along which more clearly represented the overall message of this book: what works (and matters) is taking a creative approach to using whatever gear you have available to capture music--be that an inexpensive all-in-one digital workstation, or a vintage Neve board feeding a big old 2-inch format Ampex analog recorder running at 30 ips.
So, that's the word from Tape Op: just get out there and do it. Learn the recording craft. And use and train your ears to understand what sounds good musically and what doesn't. By the way, Tape Op the magazine is free--that's right, really and totally free. (These guys are definitely marching to a different drummer, folks). Subscribe at tapeop.com . It's a special day for me every time a new issue shows up in my mailbox.Tape Op: The Book About Creative Music Recording Overview

The Music Producer's Handbook: Music Pro Guides (Technical Reference) ReviewGreat book. I wanted some overstanding about what is the producers role. I come from Eu country called Slovenia and we have a lot of music producers but it seems to me that they are not doing their job correctly. So i orded this book and and started reading and got all answers to my questions. Now i realy understand the role of a music producer and more. The workflow, tips and tricks. Interwies with the best in the biz. And on more thing Bobby has a real good way of explaining things it is a easy reading full of interesting issues. Some people are real lucky to have a mentor I am not one of them, with this book and the video Bobby really paved the way for me!

Mastering Sibelius 6 ReviewThis is an excellent presentation of Sibelius. It is well formatted and much easier to follow than the complimentary Sibelius electronic manual. It greatly assisted me in clarifying many of the more complex features of the program. I was well worth the purchase price.Mastering Sibelius 6 Overview
