Play Dead (A Dog Days Novel) ReviewI've enjoyed this whole series and this latest book is a great entry. The strongest aspects of the book is the mystery element and the characterization. While I guessed the who-dun-it in one of the earlier books, this one is more complex; even though you have a handle on the "not-so-honest" people, you're not exactly certain which crimes they are guilty of nor how many.
Lou, being a dog with a little extra, is given a large starring role in Play Dead; Mason gets a little more independent. Of course...without his friends around the *entire* time, he does seem to get in rather larger amounts of trouble.
The magic is "realistic" and doesn't overshadow the plot. The world building is top-notch, taking place in San Fransisco. Levitt does a great job of turning real places magical without ever going over-the-top. I think that is what I like about these books the most. The magic is woven with music; nature is often woven into the themes of magical places (natural forces) and there are certain settings/plants used that make the ideas come alive without becoming too far-fetched. Everything has a grounding; the characters are very real.
If you like the Dresden Files, I think you'll like this series.Play Dead (A Dog Days Novel) Overview

Peril ReviewThomas H. Cook is a genius. I do not recall saying that about any other writer I have ever reviewed. There are some fine writers out there whose work is consistently excellent. They are highly regarded by all who read the genre. Writers such as James Lee Burke, Mike Connelly, Dennis Lehane and others who write a superior novel in a style easily distinguished from others. However, Tom Cook not only writes a novel as good as any of the others, but, his style changes from one book to the next. Perhaps this is why he is not as wildly popular as some others. One never knows what to expect. Tom Cook has gone through phases where books consecutively written are somewhat similar in style and tone, such as the great BREAKHEART HILL or the Edgar winning, THE CHATHAM SCHOOL AFFAIR- historical dramas evaluating love and loss. Now he is in a phase of writing modern crime novels.
PERIL concerns Sara Labriola, wife of a mobster's son. She leaves her husband, Tony, to start a new life away from her husband and especially away from her father in law, Leonardo. She lives with fears unknown to us and wants nothing more than to disappear. However, Leonardo refuses to let her run away and insists on having her found and punished. To accomplish this task he enlists his henchman, Caruso. Tony, fearing what his evil father will do to Sara, if found, hires his own man to find her. So the novel becomes a game of several cats and only one mouse.
The novel has a unique structure. It is told from the viewpoint of seven to eight different characters. Initially, each story is unique and quite disjointed. However, as we proceed through the novel, the individual stories get shorter and shorter thereby quickening the pacing and eventually as all comes together in the end flows from one narrative to the next. It is a unique structure and quite ingenious. The only weakness in the novel is the somewhat stereotypic depiction of the evil Leo Labriola and the ludicrous coincidence of Sara's choice of a bar to work in. Truly breathtaking.Peril Overview

South of Hell (Louis Kincaid Mysteries) ReviewThis is the most recent book in the Louis Kincaid series. PJ Parrish (who are actually two authors) have written another winner!I love Louis Kincaid - he is dark, broody and honest!!! In this latest book, we find Kincaid back in his old stomping grounds trying to help another cop try to put away a murderer - but there are a few problems - one of them being that the cop is not being totally honest with Kincaid. With the help of Joe, Kincaid will find himself, investigating a cold case, in which a young girl's life may be at stake.Parrish is great with details - just enough to give you a real sens of the surroundings in which Kincaid finds himself. In most of their books, there is a decrepit, abandoned (or almos) building and South of Hell is no exception - I LOVED the chilling description of the house, especially the kitchen and the barn. I was getting goose bumps just reading it - you just know something bad happened there. The pace of this book is just perfect - however, I have to say that I prefer Louis minus Joe. For some reason, the relationship does not jive for me and I do see Louis as a loner - but I do see why Joe had to play such an important role in this book. What is also interesting is that with each book, we get a little more of an insight into who Louis truly is and where he came from.I LOVED, LOVED this book. RUN TO BUY IT.

Mystery, Suspense, Film Noir and Detective Movies on DVD: A Guide to the Best in Cinema Thrills ReviewThey don't make them like they used to do. And reading through this compendium of some of the best `mystery, suspense, film noir and detective movies on DVD' reminded me of that.
In many cases, these films were made under the studio system, whereby the scripts were tailored to the actors' strengths and personalities. This is one reason why many of the old films were so good.
The author has brought together outlines of hundreds of them, each complete with a cast list, the major production staff, copyright and release notices, story synopsis, and his own personal comment about the film.
Also embellishing some of the outlines are dozens of black-and-white photos, as well as a lengthy but well-written article on `noir, crime and mystery'. Several other shorter articles are included, aimed at those interested in the genres--the best Sherlock Holmes, and Raymond Chandler as adapted for the movies, for example.
Reid has done a marvelous job putting these all together, thus taking a lot of the legwork out of trying to locate these movies for our viewing pleasure--he includes a small list of DVD suppliers where many of these films can be purchased at very reasonable prices.
Many titles will be familiar; for example, The Maltese Falcon. However, those same people who recognize it might not realize that there were at least four adaptations of Dashiell Hammett's 1929 five-part serial; two of the movies are included in the book, one starring Ricardo Cortez, the other with Humphrey Bogart.
Other titles, of course, won't be so familiar. There are some fascinating anecdotes, too. For example, for the movie Odd Man Out, "director Carol Reed asked the composer to write the score from the shooting script and record it, so that [James] Mason could walk in time to the beat". Such tidbits encourage readers to find copies of the films in order to see for themselves how it was accomplished.
So, for the lover of vintage thriller movies, this book would make an ideal and extremely informative purchase.

Jade Green : A Ghost Story ReviewYoung, orphaned Judith moves into an old house where strange things happen, especially at night. Sound like a formula novel? It is. But it's a genuinely scary one, with a ghostly prescence that just may not be evil, and an ominous guy that's very human and just may be more wicked than the ghost. Creepy fun with a cool ending to top it off.Jade Green : A Ghost Story Overview

The Romeo And Juliet Code ReviewThis is a story written from the inside out, through the eyes and heart of an 11 year old child. The plot has been revealed by other reviewers. But the feelings of loneliness, frustration, discovery and love can only be caught in the author's poetic, nuanced language - so linked to the magnificent coastal Maine setting. The poetry is also linked to a crew of interesting and irrepressible characters, a touch of adventure, a hint of romance and humor -- all likely to entice more mature elementary and middle school children. Flissy, Derek and their quirky family grow beyond themselves without even realizing it. And we the readers are offered the gift of seeing beyond our daily trials to the strength and beauty of human spirit. I prided myself in guessing the gist of the ending well before it came. But that didn't stop me from crying when it did come. And my tears were not all sad! This is a very human lesson in history that will touch readers to the core--as if it were happening right now.
P.S. I am a children's librarian and come across many new books and am moved to review very few. Trust me. This one is a winner. The Romeo And Juliet Code Overview

Fools Die ReviewGodfather is a shallow action thriller compared to Fool's Die. Don't be fooled by the superficially simple title, this tale of a mans life is a modern David Copperfield. At times I consider Fool's Die my favorite book of all time. This seems to be Puzos sleeper novel, I can't believe there are no other reviews for it. The most enjoyable aspect is the main character's realistically flawed choices in life, a man at once both honorable and improvident. This book is required reading to all intelligent men, especially aspiring writers(the main character is a writer), who should relate to the main character's dilemmas and trials.Fools Die Overview

Los Angeles Stories (City Lights Noir) Review"I had made up my mind to quit worrying. Los Angeles was the Land of the Brighter Day, something good was bound to turn up."
These last two lines sum up the motivation that lies with the numerous characters that musician Ry Cooder offers up in his new collection of short stories. While the stories are nominally linked, the variety is enormous: mariachi players, park prophets, backalley dentists, tailors, and disc jockeys are all introduced in their native milieu. Set in the first half of the twentieth century, these stories are based on the inner life of the inner city.
This is not postcard or travel agency Los Angeles; there is no glamour or celebrities to dress it up. Even the weather doesn't seem to cooperate with stereotype: fog and rain are as frequent as bar brawls. The characters are the faceless many that work off the books, just trying to get by while the city appears as a predatory character, breathing and pulsing, foiling any attempts at the good life.
The collection is also an excellent geography text to significant Los Angeles locations--Griffith Park, Chinatown, Little Tokyo, Union Station, Bunker Hill, and Hollenbeck Park all serve as backdrops, and Cooder seems to know the streets and back alleys very well. Cocktail bars and bowling alleys are among the seedy gathering places of the working class and small time criminals that Cooder writes about and who occasionally cross tracks with each other.
My favorite was "Who do you know that I don't?" set in 1949, wherein a tailor to the mariachi clientele attempts to solve the murder of a popular jazz musician, Johnny Mumford. Cooder creates a world of layaway payments, shiny and finned cars, and musicians desperate to wear a good suit but not eager to pay. Memorably, the tailor even makes one suit to be shared by two musicians who can't afford their own, later assisting them to escape the cops while he helps search for links to the murder. A prize collection of 78 records becomes a significant clue.
Another story focuses on a resourceful guy whose job is to fill in the details on the City Directory, going door-to-door to collect information from suspicious citizens in boardinghouses and side streets. The essential absurdity of compiling an accurate book aside, Frank is diligent and thorough. Though he's essentially a simple man, his path crosses with three suspicious murders and suddenly he's a suspect:
"Once they see a pattern, they think they know it all, and they think they got you. That's not the way life is. Take it from me, life is random and inscrutable, like the City Directory."
The stories are well-plotted and heavily detailed, and the characters feel real. Cooder develops each protagonist well, and creates their world for the reader in inscrutable detail. In fact, that may be one of my only concerns about the collection: at times I felt like there was too much name-dropping and references to streets and neighborhoods and pop culture of the period. Sometimes, the many facts slowed down and derailed the narrative from its pace. I think the same effect could have been achieved without so many points of reference and still have remained realistic.

Gilda Joyce: The Ghost Sonata ReviewThe Gilda Joyce books have now officially earned the coveted spot on my top shelf, beside such classics as 'The Prydain Chronicles', 'Lord of the Rings', 'The Underland Chronicles', and 'The Dark is Rising Sequence'. They just keep getting better and better, funnier and funnier. And 'The Ghost Sonata' is no different.
When her friend Wendy is chosen in a prestigious contest to go to Oxford, England, and compete in a piano competition, Gilda is thrilled. Due to a technicality, she's able to go along with Wendy -- as her page-turner. But something is wrong -- someone or something is slipping Wendy and the other competitors tarot cards bearing terrifying dooms upon them. To add to this, Wendy is hearing strange music in her head, and thinks she's either going insane or being haunted by a ghost: the ghost of a young boy named Charles Drummond, who had her number -- nine -- in the very same competition she is currently in, and who was a brilliant composer before his death at the age of fourteen -- a death that Gilda believes was not entirely accidental.
If there was one thing I wasn't thrilled about in this book, it was that Wendy gets nearly as much page time as Gilda, and while Wendy is a good character, she's not GILDA. There wasn't any less humor, though, and I understand why Wendy needed some scenes to herself. They were perfect complements to each other: Gilda the wacky, extremely eccentric one who enjoys telling people about her psychic investigative work, and Wendy, who is rational and smart and dry-humored.
Another excellent entry in the series. Highly recommended, and I can't wait for the next book.Rating: MasterpieceGilda Joyce: The Ghost Sonata Overview

Carter Beats the Devil ReviewMy favorite novels, particularly historical novels, perfectly capture the era in which they are set not just in the character and setting but also in the style they are written. I like my Victorian novels epic and sooty, for example. "Carter Beats the Devil", based (VERY loosely) on the actual life and career of Charles Carter (NOT Houdini, as implied by some other reviewers), a turn-of-the century magician, perfectly brings to life the 1920s era.
The elaborate, tricky, and slightly melodramatic plot leaves me wondering 'what next' like an old "Perils of Pauline" silent film (the ones with the dame tied to the railroad tracks). It has the slightly slapstick quality of those movies, too. Even the modest romantic interludes have a 20s sincerity to them. It's as thrilling as a summer blockbuster movie, circa 1927.
Since the book had a reputation as a 'literary' novel, I was surprised how well it worked as sheer entertainment. This doesn't mean it lacks depth, though. Carter (the magician character) is not what you think he is, a mystery to be worked out. The same is true of many of the characters. The author gets you to think about the meaning of deception and honesty, escape and confinement, even the price and value of freedom.

It's even more interesting to read because Gold borrows techniques from magic itself to accomplish this; the author is quite adept at slight-of-hand and misdirection. You will not soon guess how it ends!Carter Beats the Devil Overview

The Big Bad City (87th Precinct Mysteries) ReviewThis book was the first book I read by Mr. McBain. And after Icompleted this novel, it was not my last. This book was fabulous, decriptive, well written prose, engaging, humane protagonists, fast moving and gripping plots--a myriad of plots! I could not put this book down. This is one of my favorite books ever. I really came to know and like many of McBain's characters... so much so, after I completed the novel--in record breaking time--I immediately went out and purchased McBain's other novels of the 87th precinct. Night Corridor ReviewCaroline Hill has all the bad luck any suspense heroine could possibly have and then some. Recovering from a complete nervous breakdown nine years ago, she is finally well enough to be leaving the hospital and begin a new life very close to the one she had. Her parents, objecting to her planned marriage to the boy she loved, had taken her newborn baby girl away from her and given it up for adoption. Now her parents are dead, her lover is gone, her daughter is gone, and she's on her own in a world for which she's not at all prepared.
Caroline is sent straight from the hospital to the town where she used to live. On her first day back, before she reports to her first-ever job as dishwasher in a small restaurant, and before she even sees her lonely room in a boarding house, she finds out there is a killer somewhere in town, murdering young women who look like her.
It's hard to put a label on exactly what Hovey does with her stories that grab you on page one and do not let go until the last page. Hovey seems to be part Mary Stewart, part Mary Higgins Clark and in no small part, Stephen King. Her unique brand of storytelling is powerful because she tells a story that takes you deep into the psyches of almost all of her characters. She writes in third person omniscient point of view, so you get to know everyone in the story--and wind up afraid of most of them because they almost all seem to be touched with evil in some way. Even Caroline battles her own demons--her fragility and inexperience because of the long recovery from her breakdown.
You walk down the darkened streets with Caroline, afraid for her. You wake up in the middle of the night when she does, hearing the same faint noises she hears, afraid for her. You put dishes into the restaurant dishwasher along with her, trying to dodge the attentions of a boorish and repellent man determined to cause trouble for her. She cannot seem to escape danger no matter how careful she is.
And you cannot stop reading.
This danger shimmers throughout her story and your average reader will be on the edge of their seat, anxious to see whether Caroline can once and for all escape the darkness that follows her, and triumph over evil.

Paydirt Review"Paydirt" is a refreshing change of pace for Levine, whose work I've read starting with TO SPEAK FOR THE DEAD (The Jake Lassiter Series) quite a few years ago. This one is not a legal thriller. It's more of a caper, at times funny, at times suspenseful, always entertaining.
Bobby Gallagher was on top of the world as an executive with the Dallas Mustangs (read "Cowboys") until he blows it by crossing the owner, who happens to be his father-in-law. In short order, Bobby is divorced, broke, and reduced to working as a chauffeur and part-time bookie. All he wants is to get his ex-wife and son back.
A string of bad bets makes it imperative that Denver beats Dallas in the Super Bowl (and cover the point spread). To make sure that happens, Bobby comes up with a hilarious scheme to fix the game. To tell any more would ruin the story.
You don't have to be a football fan to enjoy the family drama and the high risks of a natural born gambler. Will Bobby's losing streak end?
Well, that's the stuff of drama. The good stuff.Paydirt Overview

The Dead Town (Dean Koontz's Frankenstein, Book 5) ReviewTo say I was disappointed with this book is putting it lightly. I've loved this series since the first book, but starting with Lost Souls and now this... I've been really let down.
That isn't to say that there aren't good parts to this book. Erika V and Jocko are still great characters, and there are a few interesting scenes, but in the end the book is a mess. Victor is a laughable antagonist, whose so arrogent that he never really feels like a threat. The Builders are interesting, but they get overused, and the book lacks the darker, violent edge that made the first two so interesting.
The biggest problem is the sheer number of plotlines. When new characters and storylines are still being introduced during the last 75 pages, it just screams of padding. Then the ending, which should be pulse pounding and exciting, is glossed over and tied up with a "and they all lived happily ever after."
Really not very good, and a disappointing way to wrap things up.The Dead Town (Dean Koontz's Frankenstein, Book 5) Overview
