Taffanel: Genius of the Flute ReviewAs a professional flutist and one who has studied the French School for most of my life both in the US and in France, I found this book absolutely riveting. The author did a marvelous job of communicating the importance of Taffanel in establishing the flute as a viable and serious instrument within a social and cultural context that had hitherto only rendered the human voice, violin and piano as worthy of listening to within public chamber and solo contexts. What came out to me about the man was his integrity, sensitivity, humility and absolute dedication to the art, as well as his humanity and obvious generosity of spirit. In reading about Taffanel, I am reminded of one of my own teachers in France, the great Pierre-Yves Artaud, a student of Crunelle who was a student of Gaubert (who in turn was Taffanel's star pupil). You can see why Taffanel was so revered by his students and their students. As one of his "great grandchildren" (musically speaking, of course), I am honored to just be in the same family tree as this great man!Taffanel: Genius of the Flute Overview
