Historical Harpsichord Technique: Developing La douceur du toucher (Publications of the Early Music Institute) ReviewI really enjoy the tone of this book, and the way Ms. Kosovske weaves the opinions of important sources into possibilities for studies and practices. She sticks to her topic well, and it is a really important topic: Developing La douceur du toucher. My curiosity about this, and my desire to find an answer so I could teach Baroque ensembles with more knowledge about sound quality was the major reason I started studying harpsichord seven years ago. Chapters on "Preparing to Play", "Touching the Instrument", "Articulation", and "Fingering", deliver what they promise, the 24-page index is extremely helpful, and the thumbnail accounts of important figures in historical harpsichord study are very handy. Because she relies so much on sources, and puts them together so logically, the book reflects the opinions of old masters, and not so much hers. She appears rather as a friendly and knowledgeable guide, rather than a self-important figure. Bravo!
