Lunch at the Algonquin ReviewIf you're someone who's recently discovered the humor of the amazing wits of the Algonquin Round Table: Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley, George Kaufman and the rest, or are just a fan of the Roaring Twenties and the Jazz Age, then this 100 page book is worth reading. As much as the wisecracks of these guys have survived ("One more drink and I'd have been under the host", "Let's get out of these wet clothes and into a dry martini"), no one ever actually recorded what spending time with this bunch was like. Every weekday for ten years, New York's top columnists, critics and authors would meet for lunch at the Algonquin Hotel, each determined to top the other in cleverness. And that's the premise of this book: to recreate one lunch with this crew. There's not much "story" here; they show up, they joust, they leave -- and it does get a little silly at times. But even if you've already read every biography and collection about them there is, or even more so if you're new to this party, then this is worth your time, especially since the author has devoted the last quarter of "Lunch at the Algonquin" to a generous appendix with a very well researched and concise history of the times. There's only been one movie attempt at capturing these guys, "Dorothy Parker and the Vicious Circle", and for my money this book does a better job at it than it did.Lunch at the Algonquin OverviewWant to learn more information about Lunch at the Algonquin?
