Recording Tips for Engineers, Third Edition: For cleaner, brighter tracks (Mastering Music) ReviewTim Crich's Recording Tips for Engineers gave me a lot of tips. To start, Chapter One goes into becoming a better engineer, setting up clients, getting paid and getting work.
Chapter Two is about sound characteristics, human hearing, determining levels and peak vs. volume. I found this chapter useful.
Chapter Three is all about studio setup and contains some real meat on tips for setting up your studio. Mainly it is about setting up your studio with microphone placement, cables, polar patterns, ground, phase and choosing the right microphone, etc.
Chapter Four is all about drum setup. Not having drums, I didn't go into this chapter but anyone setting up drums, this chapter delves into it with tuning, miking, prep and so on.
Chapter Five is all about electric guitars and I found this chapter a good one. Included is amplifier placement, connections, loud, prep, miking and the like. Note: A beginner would be surprised to learn just having the right amp placement can be the difference between having a hit or a loser.
Chapter Six goes into acoustics, the piano, the boards, horns and such.
Chapter Seven is about vocals and primarily about setting up the mike properly, an absolute must!
Chapter Eight goes into details about the control room and contains a lot of tips from prep to speakers, equalizers to compressors. Much is covered here and I found some good tips here.
Chapter Nine is about starting from the track layout to determining when something isn't right. Some good stuff.
Chapter Ten is signal routing and levels.
Chapter Eleven is recording from tuning to pitch, effects, bouncing, doubling, edits. A huge gamut of tips here.
Chapter Twelve is my favorite and covers mixing. Prep, levels, effects, printing and after printing and mastering. This chapter is an important one for anyone doing their mixing.
Chapter Thirteen is basically an appendix with digital conversion info, bit processors, input processing, storage and so on.
I found the book easy to follow and not overwhelming. I wouldn't recommend this to newbies unless you are prepared to learn and dig into what he puts out.
