GarageBand '11 Power: The Comprehensive Recording and Podcasting Guide ReviewGarageBand is one of those Apple products which is simple at first glance, but has lots of power under the hood. I wanted a book to teach me how to harness the power. This book is good in that regard, but has more than its share of annoying flaws.
First the good news: I initially tested the book by looking up several items that I wanted to learn about. My first topic was how to do looping (recording the same thing over and over so you can choose the best track): there's a six page section telling you how to do it (GarageBand calls it Recording Multiple Takes). Next topic: the new Groove Matching feature in GarageBand 11. There are a couple of sections on this highlighted in the index.
But this is where the book starts to get annoying. There's an overview of Groove Matching in the Working with Tracks chapter, and another short entry in the Mixing chapter that says, "Revisit the section in Chapter 5". The only problem is, there's no section in the Chapter 5 Table of Contents on Groove Matching. Its mentioned in the Flex Time discussion, but no Groove Matching section. This kind of sloppiness occurs frequently.
Other annoyances:
* Pages 229-258 consist of nothing but screen shots of various Styles. No added value at all. Anyone interested in Styles will browse them in GarageBand, not the book.
* The exact same list of lessons appears on pages 36 and 378
* The exact same Wikipedia definition of a podcast is reprinted on pages 47 and 285
* Looking at the screen shots, they fall into two categories, "Useful" and "Gratuitous". While a lot of the screenshots are quite useful, many others don't show a particularly interesting feature or technique.
The money that was spent on all of this spurious content could have been spent to upgrade the paper stock so that the images were more clear. In general, although there are many screen shots, a lot are not very clear because of the low grade paper. As examples, Figures 2.27 and 2.29 effectively show no detail at all because of this. Glossy or better matte stock would have fixed this.
Overall, a solid reference with lots of good material from an author that knows the subject, with negative marks for spurious content and sloppiness. Could be a 4-star or even 5-star book with a two-day rewrite plus better design & printing.GarageBand '11 Power: The Comprehensive Recording and Podcasting Guide Overview
