Stuff Good Synth Players Should Know: An A-Z Guide to Getting Better (Book & CD) ReviewOverall this book has a lot of useful terms related to synthesizers presented in an alphabetized format. The book has many interesting examples of ways to use synths in notation form, such as pad backgrounds and bass lines. (I have three other Mark Harrison books, which are very good, and I plan to buy more of them.)This book may be most useful to the beginner who knows nothing about the many terms used in programming sounds, such as LFOs, polyphony, pads, etc. Even if the synth player does not get into the proprietary world of patch programming, he will probably gain useful knowledge about how computer generated sounds and samples work.
Many brands are mentioned, such as Yamaha and Roland, but I wonder why no mention is made of Ensoniq, the company that brought out the Mirage, EPS, SQ, KS, TS, and ASR products before being acquired by Emu. (I own an old KS-32 and I am partial to the brand.)
There is a lot to know about synthesizers, maybe too much to put into one book, but with its general background approach, this book is a good place to start.Stuff Good Synth Players Should Know: An A-Z Guide to Getting Better (Book & CD) Overview
