Don't Bury Me in a Tuxedo: Memoirs of a Trumpet Player ReviewThis book tells the story of a musician's journey from the big band era, through WWII as an Air Corps musician and as a respected section trumpet player and soloist in virtually every name band playing all over the world in every kind of venue with the legends of postwar swing and jazz music.
This is not the typical name-dropping, self-aggrandizing tale of someone working most of his life on the fringes of the rich and famous. It is instead a real and insightful accounting of one guy's life, written in the gritty language of the culture he lived in with the insights of a very smart guy who has the most phenomenal memory for detail I ever saw. Imagine remembering the sales tax on something he bought over fifty years ago. And all those names, dates, venues, recording sessions, road stories.
And, oh yeah, it's funny, too. Flea had me laughing out loud several times.
If stories of the road, the ballrooms, the dives, the studios, the famous, the music, and the characters we call musicians interest you, then this book is an essential one.
